DIRFloortime®

DIRFloortime® is a relationship-based developmental approach that guides how our OTs understand and support each child’s unique growth journey.

What is the DIR® model?

Developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, the DIR® model provides a framework for understanding how children develop socially, emotionally, and intellectually. It shows how their individual differences shape the way they experience and engage with the world. DIRFloortime® is the practical application of this model, and is widely used to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as those with other developmental, social-emotional, or learning challenges.

The three elements of DIR®:

D – Developmental | Every child follows their own developmental path. Understanding where a child is in their development helps us meet them where they are and support meaningful growth.

I – Individual Differences | Each child takes in, processes, and responds to the world in their own way. This includes how they experience sensory input, regulate their emotions, and plan and sequence actions.

R – Relationship-based | Development happens through connection. Meaningful relationships with caregivers, therapists, and educators are the engine of learning and growth.

What does Floortime® look like?

Floortime® is the hands-on application of DIR®, following a child’s natural interests and emotional lead while gently extending their capacity for connection, communication, and thinking. For younger children this often happens through play on the floor; with older children it might look like a conversation, a shared activity, or a collaborative problem-solving moment.

At Kids Matters OT, our therapists use the DIRFloortime® model to guide therapy for children with autism and other developmental or behavioural differences. It’s an approach rooted in respect, connection, and a deep belief in every child’s potential.
