5 year old girl struggling with learning to pay attention and write
This girl presented with a very weak memory (unable to recall a pattern of 5, a sentence or instruction), poor attention and a struggle learning to write. She had an explosive temper at times.
5 year old girl with microcephaly, memory and attention issues. She had excellent gross motor skills with regard to her body and was a talented gymnast.
She had working memory issues, fine motor, sequencing, visual perception and attention challenges.
Therapy started with visual and verbal sequencing games and building up her memory capacity. This then moved to strategies to support attention and focus and to learn to write the physical letters and to turn these into sentences.
Over 2 years, this girl (now 7) can write a short story in Yr 2 lines from memory. In a quiet room, she can start quickly and focus for over 5 minutes at a time. We are currently working on how she can manage her focus and attention in the noisier environment of our work gym to increase capacity.
